Patient Exhibitions

Each year, Art with a Heart in Healthcare produces an art exhibition featuring artwork by Wolfson Children's Hospital patients. The collection of art is first displayed in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Jacksonville and then permanently installed in Jacksonville healthcare facilities.

“I never had anything I have made in a frame or hung in an art show before. I am so happy that people will see my artwork.”

What Lifts You Up (2022)

What helps you feel happy when you are having a bad day or going through a difficult time? In other words, “What lifts you up?” This is the question Art with a Heart in Healthcare presented to sixteen pediatric patients of Wolfson Children’s Hospital. In response, the participating patients painted hot air balloons containing everything that brings them joy and helps them get through difficult circumstances like hospitalization. The project spotlights patients' individuality and unique artistic styles while promoting a sense of well-being, self-confidence, and healing during their hospital experience.

Behind the Mask (2021)

Behind the Mask explores digital art as a form of expression during a time when there were more barriers in communication. Drawing inspiration from American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein's use of bold colors, dot patterns, and thought bubbles, these young patients created digitized self-portraits of themselves wearing personalized face masks. Patients were empowered to voice what they were thinking behind their masks, elevating their sense of individuality, confidence, and well-being.

ANIMAL-Gamation (2019)

Sponsored by:

The exhibition is creatively entitled “ANIMAL-Gamation” — since the AWAHIH artists partnered with patients to create unique amalgamations of different animals! Patients explored their own life stories and identities in animal form by creating collages on canvas using paint, sand, feathers, pipe cleaners, gems, and much more. This thoughtful show encouraged introspection, inviting the patients to show some of their personality traits and characteristics by creating their own mythical creatures.  The exhibition highlights the amazing qualities of sixteen remarkable patients.

A World of Their Own (2018)

For this exhibition, A World of Their Own, AWAHIH posed this question to patients: "If you could create your own world... what would it look like?" In answering this question, patients explored their personalities, interests, and imagination. Then, collaborating with AWAHIH Artists-in-Residence, patients created a work of art showing the unique ways their dream world would look using a variety of art materials and techniques.

Another Side Revealed (2017)

*On display in One Call Building 9th Floor

Making a self-portrait is a way for children to express themselves and simultaneously boost their confidence and spirits. For Another Side Revealed, each artist started with a question,“If you could be anything, go anywhere, do anything ... what would it be?” In answering this question, patient artists rendered their self-portraits as they are and as they would be by exploring and conveying their personalities, stories, and imagination in a two-dimensional form. Another Side Revealed presents the vast variety of ways these artists would alter their worlds.

Inside the Outline (2016)

This 2016 patient art exhibition, Inside the Outline, came to life by asking patients this question: “What makes you happy?” To begin with, AWAHIH Artists-in-Residence traced the photographs of each patient’s facial profile. Then, the patients conveyed what makes them happy by filling their profile silhouettes with paintings of their hobbies, favorite foods, nature, and more.
